BASICS OF VIDEO SHOOTING

Framing

For interview shots, avoid shooting profiles or shooting straight-on.

It is better to frame your subject three quarters, that is, you can see both eyes of the subject. The common shot used in an interview is the medium close-up (MCU). It is close enough to see the interviewee's expressions, and also reveals a little of the surroundings. The medium close-up gives the feeling that the viewer is having a casual conversation with the interviewee.

A medium shot (MS) is also suitable for interviews. It is a slightly wider shot and allows the interviewee to move around the frame. It is ideal for active interviewees.

Close-up (CU) and extreme close-up (ECU) are seldom used in an interview. These shots are too intimate and intrusive, unless it is your intention to show strong emotions.
