Why a Latina's Concern?

- Because Latinas have a higher incident rate than non-Latinas, and compared to Anglo women.

- Because Latinas tend to have the most misconceptions about Spina Bifida and the use of Folic Acid as preventative means for Neural Tube Birth Defects.

- Lower socio economic status increases the chances of having a baby born with Spina Bifida or other Neural Tube Birth Defect.

- Obesity increases a woman's chance of having a NTD born baby. And finally,

- Diabetes, especially insulin dependent diabetes, during pregnancy increases a woman's chance of having a baby born with Spina Bifida.

- Most cases of Spina Bifida occur in the Southwest and Southeast. ( www.cdc.gov ) (Centers for Disease Control)
