A readable book about changes in family life and work-family relationships which have an important impact on children’s lives.

Jencks, Christopher and Meredith Phillips.(Eds) (1998). The Black-White Test Score Gap. Washington D.C.: The Brookings Institute.
The definitive collection and the size, scope, and causes of the racial gap in test scores.

Lareau, Annette. (2000). Home Advantage: Social Class and Parental Intervention in Eementary Education. Updated Edition. Lanham, MD: Rowman and Littlefield.
A study based on interviews and observations of first and second grade classrooms; argues that all parents want to be helpful but class gives parents resources to comply with teachers’ requests.

Lareau, Annette. (2003). Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life. Berkeley: California. Based on observations of 12 families, a readable book about the impact of social class on family life.

Lareau, Annette. (2002, October). Invisible Inequality: Social Class and Childrearing in Black Families and White Families. American Sociological Review 67 (747–776).
This article summarizes the heart of Lareau's argument in Home Advantage and Unequal Childhoods.

A journalistic account of the costs of upward mobility for a first-generation college graduate.

Massey, Douglas and Nancy Denton. (1993). American Apartheid: Segregation and the Making of the American Underclass. Cambridge: Harvard University Press.
A heavy, statistical book about the levels of racial segregation in American society.

Shapiro, Thomas (2004). The Hidden Cost of Being African American: How Wealth Perpetuates Inequality. Oxford: Oxford University Press.
Based on interviews shows the importance of race in buying homes and choosing school districts, even for middle-class families.
