Bauhin, Caspar

1560-1624.

Prodromos Theatri botanici: in quo plantae supra sexcentae ab ipso primum descriptae cum plurimis figuris proponuntur.

Editio altera emendatior. Basileae: Impensis Joannis Regis, 1671. References: Hunt 319. Includes index.

This work complements the Pinax with illustrations and detailed descriptions of more than 600 plants. Bauhin's descriptions are the first to include the detail followed by modern botanists in their plant descriptions. The work is arranged into twelve books, by type of plant. For example, the first book discusses the grasses. Not all the descriptions have illustrations, especially in the later books.

Subjects: Botany--Pre-Linnaen works.
