Taxonomic history (from RAJ):
Pogonomyrmex silvestrii Emery 1906: 159, fig. 22 (worker). Syntypes examined: 1 worker [MCZ], 2 workers [MSNG], ARGENTINA, Mendoza Province: no loc. Kusnezov, 1951; 250 [synonomy as subspecies of brevibarbis; not confirmed here]. See also Gallardo, 1932: 114 (MCZ worker here designated LECTOTYPE). NEW STATUS
Etymology: Emery named this species in honor of Prof. Silvestri, who collected the syntype series.
