SSM 801–01: General Building Rules

To ensure that the property and facilities of Student Unions and Centers buildings are used appropriately.

Note—In all 801 policies, Student Unions and Centers buildings include: the Memorial Union (Tempe); the Student Pavilion (Tempe); the Polytechnic Student Union (Polytechnic); SACS West (West); and the Student Center at the Post Office (Downtown).

The property and facilities of the Student Unions and Centers are intended for the educational, cultural, and social benefit of the university community. All other uses inconsistent with this purpose are prohibited.

Banned Items and Activities

Illegal drugs, firearms, and gambling in any form are prohibited in Student Unions and Centers.

Roller blades, roller skates, skateboards, bicycles, scooters, and the use of those items within Student Unions and Centers are prohibited.

Note: The limitation on the use of scooters is not intended to limit or redirect use of mobility devices by individuals with disabilities.

Use of candles and incense is prohibited, except for ceremonial purposes and only upon approval of the Student Unions and Centers Administration at the appropriate location and receipt of a permit from ASU Environmental Health & Safety.


Alcohol may be served or consumed only at designated special events as authorized by Arizona Board of Regents’ policy 5-108(A)(4), “Sale and Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages on Campus” and SSM 106–03, “Alcohol and Other Drugs on Campus.”


When in Student Unions and Centers, children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult who will assume responsibility for their conduct and welfare.


Service animals and dogs used in law enforcement are the only animals permitted in Student Unions and Centers buildings.

Equipment and Furnishings

Equipment and furnishings belonging to Student Unions and Centers may not be removed from or loaned out of the building.

Art, paintings, pictures, and other displays may not be moved or removed under any circumstances.
