PDP 201–01: Operation Identification |
To provide guidelines for protecting personal property

Property Control
Identifying personal property reduces the chance of theft and significantly assists in the identification and retrieval of missing property. The ASU Police Department (ASU PD) provides a service known as Operation Identification to any individual or group desiring to have personal property marked. The ASU PD encourages property owners to mark or engrave all items with individual driver’s license numbers or state ID card numbers. An ASU Police number also may be engraved to assist in the identification of items in case of theft. The “Take a Pic” program also introduced by the ASU PD encourages property owners to use their cell phones to take a picture of their property and, in the text portion of the picture, copy down the make, model, and serial number of the item, making it easier for the police to identify the item if stolen or misplaced.
Note: | Personal property that is lost or stolen is not covered for insurance purposes by State Risk Management. University faculty, staff, and students are responsible for obtaining their own insurance coverage. |
Groups borrow engravers on loan from the ASU Police Department for large-scale engraving activities with assistance from the Police Department. Engraving services are provided to all campus locations. The group or individual submits a written request to the ASU PD for the identification of items.
ASU PD schedules an appointment and engraves the items for identification.
