Summer Sessions Study Abroad 2004

 

Southern Germany
 
Dates: May 21 - June 22, 2007
Cost: $3590
Summary: In this field-based, five-week course we will explore the history of social structures in Southern Germany, primarily through the lens of technical and scientific advancements.

Location: STUTTGART MAY 21 - JUNE 1
Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg, is at the heart of the fourth-largest metro area in Germany. We will explore the history of this region from its Jurassic marine life, to its present development as a high-tech economic hub. The Museum am Löwentor, with its world-famous fossil and amber collections, will be one of the highlights of our stay.
TÜBINGEN JUNE 2 - 10
One of Germany’s oldest university cities, this was the location of Johannes Kepler’s early life and education. Our studies here will range from Kepler’s contribution to the scientific revolution, to contemporary research performed at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics.
MUNICH JUNE 11 - 22
The capital of Bavaria and Germany’s third largest city, is increasingly becoming a center for the biotechnology and software industries. It is also home of the German Museum of Technology and we will incorporate those exhibits into the class assignments.
Eligibility: As this is an honors program, participants normally have a GPA of 3.25 or better. Exceptions are made at the discretion of the program director. Applications and a $400 ($50 refundable) deposit are due February 5, 2007. However, enrollment is limited to 15, so students are encouraged to register early. Science and engineering majors are especially encouraged to apply.
Academic
Program:
Participating students will receive six (6) ASU credits. All students must enroll in the two honors seminars.

Living
Accommodations:
Hotels are strategically located in the cities we will visit, in order to provide opportunities to interact and experience their unique context.
Cost: The cost of $3,590 (subject to possible change) includes local travel, housing, course-sponsored field trips, and admission to cultural events and museums. Not included: ASU Tuition and fees, airfare, food, passports, books and personal expenses.
