Summary: The College of Design at Arizona State University offers this three-week program in SPAIN, FRANCE and the NETHERLANDS to enable the participants to study the relationship between context and design in some of the most exciting European cities.

Location: BARCELONA MAY 26 - JUNE 1
Barcelona is a vital and visually stunning city located by the Mediterranean Sea. The city is one of the most vibrant centers of design culture in Europe. To explore the richness of its people and design, we will concentrate on the work produced by two relevant design figures: Antoni Gaudi and Enric Miralles.

PARIS JUNE 2 - 8
At the French capital, the focus of our explorations will be several exceptional museums, among them: The Louvre, D'orsay, and Pompidou, as well as the detailed study of major works by Le Corbusier, including the seminal Ville Savoye. The group will have ample opportunity to discover other relevant aspect of contemporary design in this city. A field trip to Versailles is also included.

AMSTERDAM JUNE 9 - 12
Amsterdam was the historical centre of trade in Northern Europe and today is a vibrant city that still retains its picturesque character. From our hotel located by the Vondelpark in the Museum Quarter, we will explore the richness of this city concentrating on three major museums: The Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk and Van Gogh Museum.



Eligibility: This three-week program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Design and related disciplines. The program is open to non-ASU students. Applications and a $275 non-refundable deposit are due on or before February 5, 2007. Applications received after this date will be considered on a space available basis.
Academic
Program:
The six-credit component will consist of a seminar, lectures, field trips, and object-context analysis. Each participant will select and explore a topic(s): furniture, street graphic, a particular artistic movement and its relationship with society, the work of a particular designer, or other related issues, and will develop sketches, and notes interpreting what is seen and experienced. Relevant questions and findings will be discussed in seminars. Students will be required to participate in all seminars and field trips, and to keep a sketchbook with daily entries and sketches.

Living
Accommodations:
Well-located hotels have been selected in the cities being visited, in order to provide opportunities to interact and experience their unique context.
Cost: The cost of $4,550 (subject to possible change) includes: round trip airfare from Phoenix to Barcelona and return from Amsterdam, hotels, buffet breakfast, group transportation, and entrances fees. Not included: ASU tuition and fees for 6 credits, additional meals, and personal expenses.
