About SafeZONE

SafeZONE is a program designed to increase the overall campus community's understanding and awareness of issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (LGBTQ) and other marginalized persons. SafeZONE was created to provide a safer, more receptive, and accepting campus climate by preparing members of the ASU community to serve as a resource on LGBTQ issues while educating the campus community about the SafeZONE Program. The Program provides three ongoing workshops to the campus community - SafeZONE 101, Gender Identity 101, and Becoming an Ally.

Why do we have SafeZONE?

Arizona State University (ASU) and the surrounding community are proud of their culturally diverse population and support cultural diversity in every way possible. SafeZONE is a subtle way to say that all sexual orientations and gender identity and expressions are part of our culture and are acknowledged and supported.

What does it mean to be a SafeZONE member?

SafeZONE members agree to be aware of the presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. Members also believe that campuses and communities are enriched by the diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and are willing to assist individuals in accessing support and information resources on campus and in the community. SafeZONE members also agree to maintain confidentiality at work and comfortably use inclusive language, avoid stereotyping, and do not assume heterosexuality.

Members display a SafeZONE placard to identify themselves as someone who has chosen to educate her/himself about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues and has information about local resources.

Anyone who is interested and willing to be an ally/advocate can join SafeZONE. Members of SafeZONE need only to be open and supportive to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and willing to learn about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expressions.

Do I have to be LGBTQ to join SafeZONE?

Displaying a SafeZone symbol does not mean that you are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. It means you are supportive of the needs of others and willing to learn about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.
