Math-Science Honors Program - Summer 2008

The Math-Science Honors Program is an intense academic program that provides motivated students an outstanding opportunity to begin university mathematics and science studies before graduating high school. The program is designed to provide a successful university experience for students who are underrepresented in the mathematics and science fields and to enhance their prospects for future academic success. Participants live on the Arizona State University (ASU) main campus while enrolled in a university level mathematics course for college credit. Tuition, room and board, textbooks, and classroom supplies are paid by ASU. Participants attend six hours per day. Homework is assigned daily, quizzes are given twice a week, and tests are given weekly. Tutoring and problem solving sessions are provided in the evenings. A variety of academic presentations and activities are scheduled during each session.

Throughout its tenure, MSHP has done a tremendous job in motivating some of the most creative minds of the new generation of prospective mathematicians, scientists and engineers within the state of Arizona to create a statewide community of future scholars. As of the summer of 2007, 2,155 total students representing 140 high schools from across Arizona have attended MSHP. MSHP is fully supported and funded by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost of The University.  The high level of financial and administrative support provided by ASU to MSHP is a reflection of the serious commitment to recruitment and retention in the fields of Mathematics and the various Sciences. As of September 2007, 1,288 students affiliated with MSHP were enrolled full-time or had completed a degree program at ASU. MSHP alumni have gone on to receive prestigious scholarships and internships and have been accepted to some of the most respected universities in the country.
