Meeting Notes for September 2, 2004

    Announcements
    - WNUG is looking for Co-Chair, Note Taker and Steering Committee members. Please send in nominations or volunteer for a position by sending a note to Cecilia Winnegar, Karra Lawrence or any member of the steering committee.     - ASUMAC Users Group is hosting an event for all ASU technology support staff on September 15 at the MU. Frank Callaham of Apple Computer will be discussing Apple's Enterprise Solutions. More information will be available on the ASUMAC website.

    - Security Awareness Week to be held the week of September 20. There will be giveaways, booths, speakers, password crackers, hackers and more. If you would like to volunteer, send a note to Robin Manke-Cassidy.

    - ASU PPP is being outsourced and will now have 56K modems available. The switch is scheduled for Friday, September 10th. The same phone number will be used. Customers should not have to make any changes. An 800 number available in the continental US has been established but will not be free. IT is working on the details concerning billing/payment for use of the 800 number.

    - Any topics or suggestions for meetings should be forwarded to Cecilia Winnegar, Karra Lawrence or any member of the steering committee.

    Feature Presentation
    Dell, along with EMC and Legato, presented their Server, Storage and Backup solutions for the enterprise. Presentation material will be provided and placed on the WNUG website.

    Dell Servers by Chris Colby (Dell Systems Consultant)
    Summary of various flavors of the PowerEdge Server line and the PowerVault autoloader tape drives. Included the following:

    • PowerEdge Servers: 750, 1850, 2850, 6650
    • PowerVault Tape Drives: 122T, 132T, 136T, 160T
    Touched on PCI Express, new generation of PCI bus architecture for increased throughput and Dell Remote Access Card (DRAC), the hardware version of Terminal Services.

    EMC˛ Storage Practice Overview by Jayme Taylor
    Primary focus is on information management software solutions including:
    • Archiving solutions
    • Backup/Recovery
    • Disaster Recovery
    • Availability and replication
    Data management involves information lifecycle management. The value of data changes over time. For example 80% of data is inactive (not accessed in 30 days). Solution for archiving data while keeping it accessible to users.

    EMC˛/Legato by Steve Hight
    Discussed the use of VMware to share server hardware to consolidate servers. Enables multiple OSs and applications/services to run simultaneously on same Intel based server reducing hardware cost.
    Use of various storage devices including: SAN, NAS and CAS for meeting enterprise needs.
