Course Description and Objectives

This course explores issues related to copyright law and intellectual property. Topics covered will include the various laws and legal issues surrounding intellectual property in both the print and electronic environment, including patents, trademarks, and copyright; standards and guidelines for legal and ethical use of intellectual property; global issues surrounding intellectual property, including various cultural assumptions about the use of information.

Graduate Students: Students registered for graduate credit (TWC598) will complete an additional assignment.

+/- grades will not be used in this course

Details on readings and assignments are posted in the Schedule area in Blackboard.

Each week for the first 8 weeks of the course I will post a discussion question/topic based on the readings for that week. Your posts should engage in discussion of the topic and demonstrate that you have completed and understood the readings. Each of you brings your own knowledge and perspectives to the readings; your discussion of them with each other is a significant part of learning. I will not be counting the number of posts for each of you; instead grading will be based on your active participation in the discussion, posts that demonstrate you have completed and understood the readings, and that raise issues and questions about the topic.
