For the Blog assignment, we will be using the free software at Blogger.com. Basic instructions for setting up and posting to a blog using this software are below:

To set up your blog:

  1. Go to http://www.blogger.com
  2. Look around if you like or click on the "Start Now!" button in the Create Your Own Blog! box.
  3. READ THE TERMS OF SERVICE.
  4. Fill in the form to create your account.
  5. Name your blog and type a description.
  6. Do you want your blog to be public?
    1. If yes, your first post to the blog should indicate that you are working on this for a class assignment.
    2. If no, not a problem. You can make it public later or leave it private.
    3. Be sure to read the distinctions between public and private. "Private" in this case does not mean it is inaccessible. It will still be hosted on a public webserver and potentially viewable by anyone.
  7. Leave "Host it at BlogSpot" selected.
  8. Give your blog an address.
  9. Select a template. You can change or edit your template once your account is set up.
  10. Your blog is now created and you can start posting.
  11. IMPORTANT: SEND ME THE NAME, DESCRIPTION, AND URL OF YOUR BLOG.
  12. I'll post a list of titles and URLs in Blackboard and at http://digrights.blogspot.com/. This is not a public blog, but if you do not want your blog linked, please let me know.

To post to your blog:

  1. Click on "Posting" in the blue navigation bar at the top of the page (just under Blogger logo).
  2. Type your post in the box. You can use the formatting buttons or type in HTML code.
  3. Click on "Preview Your Post"
  4. From here you can click on edit to edit your post, delete to delete it, or publish to post it to your blog.
  5. When you're ready to post it, be sure to click on "Republish Your Blog" to send the post to the server.
  6. You can edit or delete a posting by clicking on the "Manage Your Posts" button.

Other settings:

  • Under "Settings" (blue navigation bar), you have the option of changing the title/description of your blog, some formatting, and adding members who can post.
  • Under "Template" (blue navigation bar), you can change your template either by typing the HTML code or selecting another of the predefined templates.
