Some Miscellaneous Stuff I picked up over the years teaching Organic Chemistry

Vivid demonstration of learning skills during office hours, CHM 332, 2000. The students are working problems and engaging in cooperative learning techniques!

Students teaching each other (and also panicking) a couple of hours before a quiz is due, CHM 331, 2003!

I once asked a second semester o-chem class for the structure of THF, here are some of their answers! Remember, this is a class that could probably do a Gabriel amine synthesis, obtain the correct stereochemistry of an electrocyclic ring closure and do 5 step synthesis questions. There is a lesson here somewhere...

Often, students tell me that they are starting to dream about organic chemistry a few days before a final. I usually tell them that if they are dreaming about organic then it means they are working just about hard enough! Both of the emails below came after the first midterm of first semester organic. These students started a little early!

Hi Dr. Gould!
I have to tell you something funny that happened to me last night. All day after the test I was trying to figure out how to draw the line angle formula you requested on the exam. I know I got it wrong and I was trying to figure it out in my head as I went about my day yesterday. Last night out of a dead sleep I sat bolt up-right and knew the answer! I should've made a C-C double and triple bond in the line angle formula. I was glad I figured it out (even in my sleep) though I know it won't help me on the test. But! You've got me thinking about chemistry day and night! :)

And another one...
Oh, and I must tell you that I have literally been dreaming about Organic Chemistry now. Yesterday, I dreamt about carboxylic acids, amines, aromatics, and esters. I could see them floating around while I was sitting in, ironically, one of my supply chain management classes!!

OK, how cool is this??

This is a piece of jewelry that was actually made by a student in CHM 234, Spring 2007. It is called "Testosterone/Estradiol".

So.... which is which (testosterone and estradiol)?

Speaking of testosterone and estradiol.......

O-Chem at the D-backs! Face hidden to protect the guilty!

How a CHM 233 student, Fall 2011, studied the mechanisms of alkene addition reactions, note the picture of Markovnikov!

And thanks to a student from CHM 233, Fall 2011, for the following gem:

John Pennington, CHM 233 Fall 2011, take a bow!

And yes, this is exactly what Problem Set #4 in CHM 233 is like!!

The CHM 233 Fall 2011 were an odd bunch, too much o-chem studying here...
