AIDS Awareness Week

The ASU AIDS Awareness Week planning committee would like to invite the campus community to participate in our educational events taking place the week of February 11th - February 15th.

With Arizona’s HIV infection rate increasing faster than its population rate, and with more than one million people in the United States and 40 million people worldwide living with HIV, it is imperative that we prepare our students to actively respond to the challenges of this pandemic.  Not only must they understand how to reduce their risk of acquiring the virus, they also need to understand the medical, psychological, sociological, and financial ramifications of this disease from an individual, community and global perspective. Please share our schedule of events for HIV/AIDS Awareness Week with your students and the campus community.

World AIDS Day

images1.jpg
Please join us in recognizing this day on November 30th by wearing red clothing and help spread the awareness.

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 39.5 million people living with HIV, including 2.3 million children. During 2006 some 4.3 million people became newly infected with the virus.

Around 95% of people with HIV/AIDS live in developing nations. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world.

Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is not just about raising money, but also about increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.

Day of Remembrance

Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice (transphobia). The event is held on 20 November, founded by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco, California candlelight vigil in 1999. Since then, the event has grown to encompass memorials in hundreds of cities around the world.

Join us in remembering those who have passed. Tuesday, November 20th 6-8pm Hayden Lawn.

We will also be on campus tabling all day.

Coalition Office

As many of you know a fire took place last week in the Memorial Union. Because of the fire the MU has been closed indefinately. We are working on a safe space for LGBTQ students to get information and to hang out but as you can imagine this has put a strain on everyone on campus. We will still have our regular meetings every Thursday in the Student Services building room 394S, which is located on the 3rd floor in the Multicultural Student Center. If you have any questions/comments/concerns please do not hesitate to contact any member of the E-board. Thank you.
