Sidelights: Between 1981 and 1987, Alleen Nilsen and I established an affiliate of the Workshop Library on World Humor. Our affiliate was named the "World Humor and Irony Membership" (WHIM) and we convened a series of six international humor conferences at Arizona State University. One year after each conference, we published the proceedings of the previous conference under the title of World Humor and Irony Membership Serial Yearbook (WHIMSY). In 1988 our name was changed to the "International Society for Humor Studies," and our conference moved to Purdue University. This was followed by conferences International ISHS Humor Conferences in Laie Hawaii (1989); Sheffield, England (1990); St. Catharines, Canada (1991); Paris, France (1992); Luxembourg, Luxembourg (1993); Ithaca, New York (1994); Birmingham, England (1995); Sydney, Australia (1996); Edmond, Oklahoma (1997); Bergen, Norway (1998); Oakland, California (1999); Osaka, Japan (2000); College Park, Maryland (2001); Forli, Italy (2002); Chicago, Illinois (2003); and Dijon, France (2004). 2005 will be in Youngstown, Ohio; 2006 will be in Copenhagen, Denmark; 2007 will be in Atlanta, Georgia; and 2008 will be either in Taiwan, or in South Africa. As the Executive Secretary of ISHS, I have been the ISHS coordinator in the organization of these International ISHS Humor Conferences. In 1988 the "International Society for Humor Studies" began the publication of a quarterly journal named HUMOR: International Journal of Humor Research. As the Executive Secretary of ISHS, it has been my responsibility to coordinate with ISHS members and to send them the journals and other humor-research materials. This journal is now in its seventeenth year of publication. Very often humor scholars, and graduate students who are writing thesis or dissertations in some aspect of ambiguity, comedy, humor, innuendo, irony, paradox, parody, satire, or sarcasm, will also request these bibliographies to help them with their research. I am constantly in the process of updating these bibliographies so that they will be of help to anyone who needs this type of research material. |
