English Graduate Studies at Arizona State University


Welcome to Graduate Studies in English at Arizona State University in beautiful Tempe, Arizona. Positioned near the South Mountains that form the southern rim of the Valley of the Sun, ASU offers spectacular physical landscapes, year-round temperate climates, diverse ethnic and cultural environments, state-of-the-art research facilities, and strong academic programs and faculty. The Department of English, housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has created a diverse and energetic intellectual atmosphere within which to pursue graduate studies and boasts one of the largest, most productive faculties in the western United States. Approximately 250 graduate students are enrolled each semester. One third of these students hold teaching assistantships. A variety of interesting graduate courses are offered each semester. The program awards excellence by offering outstanding financial packages, including travel funds for professional development. Graduate students in the English Department frequently present at national, international and local conferences and have received many prestigious awards. Class sizes are small, giving students the opportunity to work closely with professors in a variety of fields. Reading groups, guest lectures, workshops and other events help bring students and faculty together. Opportunities for professional development and mentoring, such a Preparing Future Faculty, Preparing Future Professionals, GSEA, and forums for graduate students, prepare graduate students for successful careers within and beyond academia.
