Summary: The Arizona State University Winter Program in Italy is designed to give students a first hand look at how democracy and citizen education are practiced in one of Europe’s most influential democracies.

Additional Information
Location: NAPLES (DECEMBER 28 - 30)
This site will include visits to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, and the Greek ruins of Pasteum.
ROME (DECEMBER 30 - JANUARY 4)
This course will begin with visiting ancient Rome and then to Rome’s current political institutions (Palazzi Chigi, il Quirinale, Montecito Rio). This site will also include visits to the US Embassy and Vatican City.
FLORENCE (JANUARY 4 - 7)
In Florence, the course will visit the old castles of the Florencian city-state.
MILAN (JANUARY 7 - 9)
On the way to Milan, the course will visit Bologna, one of Europe’s oldest university cities. In Milan, we will visit the U.S. Consulate and visit with a representative from Italy’s largest Muslim organization to understand the role of immigration and diversity in the teaching of civics in the classroom.
TURIN (JANUARY 9 - 11)
Turin will take the students to the heart of the Turin monarchy that sparked the transition to Italy’s modern democracy and ushered in the Italian industrial revolution, which was critical to the transformation to the modern democracy.
Eligibility: This program is open to all students in good standing with the University. Proficiency in Italian is NOT a prerequisite. Applications with a $150 ($100 non-refundable) deposit are due by September 30, 2006. Applications will be accepted until November 22, 2006 or until the program is full. Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis.

Accommodations:
Students will be housed in double occupancy hotel rooms.
Cost: The cost of $4,245 (subject to possible change) includes: program fees, airfare, housing, some excursions, some meals, and local travel. Not included: Tuition and fees, additional meals ($30 per day), and personal expenses.
