Mission to Pimería: St. John's Mission Band
The St. John’s Mission Band was very well known, and whenever there was a celebration, it was invited to participate. They played in parades, concerts, the State Fair, and were in attendance at the festive opening of local “Motor Expositions.” The band also entertained at the yearly St. John’s Indian Festival, the largest bazaar of its kind in Arizona, where thousands paid to sample a western style barbecue, purchase Indian crafts, and observe Indian dances.
A 1923 article in the Arizona Republic noted that “the splendid discipline and remarkable talent developed in the boys at the Mission was most creditably reflected in the concert numbers so finely rendered. . .”
