The Fiesta Bowl was organized by the Arizona Sportsman Foundation as a venue for a game between the champion of the Western Athletic Association (WAA), composed of eight Rocky Mountain universities, and an outside opponent. The bowl game would also boost tourism for Phoenix and the Valley. The first game was December 27, 1971, and pitted Arizona State vs. Florida State.
