  • Evergreen, tolerant of poor soil, but good drainage is essential, part shade to full sun, young trees should not dry out during first two years until roots are established, deep periodic irrigation after that, pines that are kept too dry are slow growing, have sparse foliage, and a weakness to pests and diseases.<br/><b>Location</b>: Planted on landscaped perimeter of campus.

  • Evergreen shrub, 4 foot high, very colorful, orange to red blooms in the warm weather, heat tolerant, comes back quickly if it freezes.<br/><b>Location</b>: Main entrance on Thunderbird road, arboretum, and parking lot behind <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FAB' target='_blank'>FAB</a>.
  • Mostly evergreen may drop leaves during cold or drought, red, powder puff like blossoms, needs good drainage, reflected sun to part shade.<br/><b>Location</b>: Main entrance to campus on Thunderbird road.
  • Medium to large shrub that grows 8-10 ft. high and as wide.  Long pointed leaves that are medium green.  Showy flowers in mid-spring through summer.  Widely adapted including very dry areas.  Tolerates heat, aridity, sun, wind, and extended periods of drought.  They develop into mounding shrubs or can be clipped as hedges.  Can be pruned as single or multiple trunk trees for use in patios, courtyards and parking lot planters.<br/><b>Location</b>: Front entry on Thunderbird road.
  • Tolerant of poor soils, may grow to 6 ft., Occasional deep irrigation, love heat-full sun.<br/><b>Location</b>: Main entrance and scattered throughout campus.
  • Evergreen, needs good drainage, full sun, blooms better with little water can be messy, very colorful.<br/><b>Location</b>: Center median at main entrance to campus.
  • Evergreen, full sun, moderate water, colorful.<br/><b>Location</b>: Main entry way on Thunderbird road.
  • Small clumping perennial grass, growing 2-3 ft. high.  Light green with showy flower stalks in summer through fall and have mixed colors of white, pink, and purple.  Used in rock gardens, small planters, and on banks and slopes.  Adapted to heat, sun, drought, cold, and poor soils.  Produces a highly viable supply of seed.<br/><b>Location</b>: 47th Ave. Median.

  • Evergreen trailing plant, yellow flowers, fast grower, likes moderate water, full sun, may freeze but comes back in spring.<br/><b>Location</b>: North side of University Way North
  • Shrub with heavy clusters of yellow flowers, tender to frost, good drainage, drought tolerant.<br/><b>Location</b>: North side of University Way North, landscaped areas along perimeter or campus.
  • Small tree to 35 ft., clusters of yellow blooms in spring, fast grower, needs good drainage, full sun.<br/><b>Location</b>: North parking lots.
  • Evergreen, slow grower to 20 to 30 ft., fragrant light yellow to creamy flowers in dense clusters in spring and sometimes into summer, tolerant of any soil, part or full sun, moderate to ample water, likes heat, hardy to cold but may become deciduous in coldest winters.<br/><b>Location</b>: Along entrances to north parking lots.
  • Partly evergreen, fastest growing of the mesquites, good drainage but tolerant of different soils, full sun, widely tolerant of water from little to none or ample, hardy to cold and heat.<br/><b>Location</b>: North side of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=UCB'>UCB</a> and scattered throughout landscaped areas of campus.
  • Evergreen perennial, 2 to3 ft. high, gray green leaves with purple flowers in summer, good drainage, full sun to part shade, will go dormant when dry or cold, damaged at 20 degrees F.<br/><b>Location</b>: Landscape areas north of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=UCB'>UCB</a> and <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FAB'>FAB</a> and in south parking lots.

  • Deciduous, can be grown as a shrub or small tree, large clusters of flowers in shades of red, white, purple and pink in warm weather, listed as a full sun plant but grows better here with filtered shade, full sun causes leaves to burn around edges, prefers good soil and drainage, avoid overhead irrigation, best with deep spaced irrigation, hardy to cold, likes heat.<br/><b>Location</b>: Planters in UCB courtyard, landscaped areas around mall and north of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=UCB'>UCB</a> and <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FAB'>FAB</a>.

  • Arborescent Hardiest big -leafed philodendron used outdoors.  Becomes big plant 6-8 ft. high and as wide.  Large leaves and self-supporting trunks.  Will grow inside but takes up lot of space.   • Desert native up to 4,000 feet elevation, slow growing, thorny when young, absorbing thorns as they grow to become rough and fissured at maturity, foliage is gray-green with pea-shaped orchid flowers in early summer, where it grows naturally indicates a climate compatible to citrus culture. Evergreen to deciduous in cold winters, grows best in loose, sandy, gravelly soil with good drainage, full to reflected sun, heat tolerant and drought-resistant but best with periodic irrigation, freezes at about 20 degrees and makes only moderate recovery.<br/><b>Location</b>: East side of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FAB'>FAB</a>.
  • Native to southwest and Mexico, not a true willow but has weeping leaves, blooms from April through late summer in shades of white, lavender and pink, rapid grower with good water, tolerant of heat, cold, drought and wind. Deciduous, prefers deep loose soil with good drainage, part shade to full or reflected sun, moderate to ample water in summer.<br/><b>Location</b>: East side of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FAB'>FAB</a>
  • Native to southwestern United States and northern Mexico, grows along washes and sandy areas, wide -spreading tree with a rounded crown and a naturally low branching habit, fast growing up to 25 ft. high and as wide, bark and foliage is blue-green, yellow blossoms in midspring. Deciduous, tolerant of most soils but prefers sandy soil and good drainage, full to reflected sun, tolerates drought but may lose leaves, grows and looks best with some irrigation, hardy to about 12 degrees F.<br/><b>Location</b>: East side of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FAB'>FAB</a>, on perimeter on Sweetwater.
  • Evergreen, shrub or small tree, wisteria-like blooms in the spring, grows fast with high heat, moderate water, hardy to cold.<br/><b>Location</b>: East side of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FAB'>FAB</a>
  • Chaste tree-widespreading crown, naturalized in warm areas of US., needs heat to develop fully and to bloom well, flowers in early summer and early fall, flowers are usually blue but can be pink or white. Deciduous, tolerant of wide range of soils, part, full or reflected sun, moderate to little water, hardy to cold, loves heat.<br/><b>Location</b>: East side of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FAB'>FAB</a>.
  • Vigorous grower, yellow or white flowers in spring, trained on trellis or grown on ground as an informal mound, evergreen to deciduous in colder climates, tolerant but prefers well prepared garden soil, part to full sun, water moderately, hardy but may lose leaves in coldest winters.<br/><b>Location</b>: Growing on arbors along mall.
  • Graceful weeping tree, hardy, moderate grower 15 to 20 ft. high with spread of under 20 ft., drought resistant, full to reflected sun, needs good drainage.<br/><b>Location</b>: <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=CLCC'>CLCC</a> courtyard.
  • Flowering trees with butterfly shaped wings, bloom on last years wood, briefly deciduous, tolerant of most soils but alkaline soils may burn leaves, part shade to full or reflected sun, moderate to ample water, hardy to 22 degrees F.<br/><b>Location</b>: <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=CLCC'>CLCC</a> courtyard and along mall.
  • Tough drought resistant shrub, native to this area, fast grower, attracts whiteflies, tolerant of alkaline, rocky or heavy soils, part, full or reflected sun, best with regular widely spaced irrigation.<br/><b>Location</b>: <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=CLCC'>CLCC</a> beside block wall of loading area.
  • Briefly deciduous in early spring, prefers loose sandy soil, full sun,widely spaced deep irrigation, too much water in early fall produces new growth tender to frost.   • Evergreen, not a true jasmine, moderate growth rate, yellow trumpet shaped flowers, poisonous, tolerant of all soils, full to part shade, moderate water, loves heat.<br><b>Location</b>: Ground cover around Arizona Orchids behind <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=UCB'>UCB</a> .
  • Tropical color , shelter from hot winds and intense sun in the lower zone, plant in spring after danger of frost is gone, evergreen, good drainage is a must, soak deeply , allow soil to dry and plant to almost wilt before watering, foliage damaged at about 25 degrees freezes below that but recovers quickly with feeding and irrigation.<br><b>Location</b>: Planter around Kiva and along north and south side of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=SANDS'>Sands</a>.
  • White blossoms in late winter before other plants bloom, moderate growth to 25 ft. with crown spread as wide in rich deep soils?15 to 20ft.   • Round-headed, compact, fast growing tree 20-25ft. tall with purple-red fall color, no seeds, moderate water, loose soil with good drainage, part to full or reflected sun, hardy, tolerant of heat.<br/><b>Location</b>: West side of <a class='gold' target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=SANDS'>Sands</a> classroom in lawn.
  • Evergreen in warm climates, will climb and attach itself with 3-clawed tendrils to any surface, yellow trumpet shaped flowers in spring, tolerant of poor soil, shady walls to walls in sun, tolerates wide range of water, turns purple with cold.<br/><b>Location</b>: Growing on fences surrounding service yards east and west of Fletcher <a target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FLHLB'>library</a>.
  • Evergreen perennial in warm climates, tolerant of poor soil, part or full sun, moderate water, foliage damaged at 28 degrees F. but recovers quickly.   • Native to the Chihuahaun desert, trailing and mounding evergreen ground cover, can spread 6 ft. in diameter, roots from stems as it spreads, gray leaves, clusters of tiny purple flowers in spring, tolerant of poor soil but needs good drainage, light shade to full or reflected sun, drought resistant but needs some irrigation to encourage growth and spreading, hardy to cold.<br/><b>Location</b>: Growing in islands around small parking lots east and west sides of <a target='_blank' href='http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/?campus=west&building=FLHLB'>library</a>.
  • Evergreen to partly deciduous, can be shrub or small tree 15 to 20 ft. high, yellow fragrant puffball flowers in late fall, tolerates poor and alkaline soils, part, full or reflected sun, loves heat, moderate or ample water for faster growth, foliage is damaged at 20 degrees F.<br/><b>Location</b>: Entrances to south parking lots and north parking lots.

  • Can be evergreen in warm climates, summer bloomer with brilliant orange-red and yellow flower clusters and lush green, ferny foliage.
