Taxonomic history (from RAJ):
Pogonomyrmex vermiculatus var. atrata Santschi, 1922: 347 (worker). Syntypes examined: 1 worker [MHNG], 2 workers [MACN], 11 workers [MLPA], ARGENTINA, Mendoza Province: Tres Esquinas (Dr. Carette). See also Gallardo, 1932: 139, fig. 25 (MHNG worker here designated LECTOTYPE).
Pogonomyrmex atratus Santschi; Kusnezov, 1951: 251. Raised to species.
Etymology:
The specific epithet, atratus (Latin, atratus = clothed in black), refers to the deep black coloration that Santschi noted in the species description.
