Species: Pogonomyrmex andinus
Taxonomic history (from RAJ):
Pogonomyrmex longibarbis subsp. andinus Kusnezov, 1951: 276, fig. 12a (worker, queen, male). Syntypes examined: 2 workers, 1 male, #5712 [LACM]; 12 workers, 2 males, #5710 [USNM], ARGENTINA, Salta Province: San Antonio de los Cobres, ca. 3800 m (N. Kusnezov leg.) (USNM worker here designated LECTOTYPE).
Pogonomyrmex andinus Kusnezov: Kusnezov, 1978: 107. Raised to species.
Etymology:
The specific epithet, andinus, (Latinzation of Andes), refers to the syntypes of this species being collected at high elevations (ca. 3800 m) in Los Andes.
