Pogonomyrmex meridionalis Kusnezov, 1951: 277 (worker). Syntypes examined: 1 worker [FML], ARGENTINA, Chubut Province, Bajo Caracoles (south of Lago Buenos Aires [pueblo]), #5857 (N. Kusnezov leg.). (HOLOTYPE).
Etymology: The specific epithet, meridionalis (from Latin, meridional = southern), refers to the worker being collected from southern Argentina.
