Holotype worker: ARGENTINA, Neuquén Province: Departamento de Aluminé, 4.8 km E Villa Pehuenia, 38º53.3'S 71º08.3'W, 3830' (1160 m), 9 February 2011 (R.A. Johnson #4700) [MACN]. Paratypes, same data as holotype: FML (3w), MACN (9w), LACM (3w), MCZ (3w), RAJC (14w, 1aq), UCDC (3w), USNM (3w). Additional paratype series on same date from 2.5 km W Villa Pehuenia, 38 o 52.0'S 71 o 12.4'W, 3780' (1145 m) - RAJ #4701: MACN (3w), RAJC (21w).
Etymology: The specific epithet, araucana, is a noun in apposition and invariant in form that is derived from a group of Indians that lived in this region of Argentina and used the nuts (seeds) of the monkey puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana).
