There are a couple ways to insert accent marks into your documents.

If you have Microsoft Office Suite 2000 or greater, then you can use the language bar & the international keyboard.

Instructions:

Left/Standard click the Start button and select the Control Panel, which will either be in the start menu or in Settings.  Once in the control panel, double click the icon “Regional and Language Options”.  On the top there should be three tab options, Regional Options, Languages and Advanced.  Click on the Languages tab.  Where is it says “Text services and input languages,” click on “Details.”  A new menu should pop up that allows you choose languages to add to your computer.  On the right-hand side click the “Add” button.  Once in the “Add Input Language” window, click the box next to “Keyboard Layout/IME”.  In the pull-down menu under “Keyboard Layout/IME”, select “United States-International”, then click OK.  This should direct you back to the “Text Services and Input Languages” menu.  On the bottom in the Preferences section, click “Language bar…”  Make sure the box next to “Show the Language bar on the desktop” is checked.  Click OK.  On the bottom of the “Text Services and Input Languages” menu, click APPLY, then OK.  In the “Regional and Language Options” menu, click, APPLY and then OK.  This should add the international keyboard option to your computer.  On the bottom of your desktop attached to your start bar, there should now appear a little keyboard on the screen.  Click this keyboard, and select “United States-International.”  This now allows you to use accents while you are typing.

To get an accent that looks like “è”, hit the `~ key (usually to either the left of “1” or to the right of “0” on laptops) before you type a vowel.  To get an accent like “é”, hit the “’ key (the same one you would use for an apostrophe).

NOTE:  These instructions were composed using Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and Microsoft Office Suite 2003.  These instructions could vary between operating systems and Office Suite versions.

The other way to insert accent marks in your documents is to use the Character Map.
Unless your keyboard is set as US English International, this is the only way to insert accent marks in your quizzes.

Instructions:
Left click on the Start button, select Programs, move the mouse up to Accessories, in the drop down menu that opens up, move the mouse down to System Tools and in the new menu select Character Map. In the Font drop down menu, select Times New Roman (or whatever font you are using). Keep the Character Map opened during your quiz or when you create a document. You will notice that when you work in your document, the Character Map window disappears. It actually minimizes and you can bring it back up by clicking on the Character Map button that appears at the bottom of your screen. When you need to insert the accent mark, just find the character you need, click on it, click on Select and then click on Copy. Point the cursor where you need the vowel with the accent, right click and select Paste.
