SSM 301–13: Aid for Students Completing Graduate Preparatory Course Work

Purpose

To allow access to Federal Stafford student loans to students who must complete preparatory course work to qualify for admission to a graduate degree program at Arizona State University

Policy

Students who are not enrolled in an eligible program leading to a degree or certificate but are enrolled at least half-time in a course of study necessary to enroll in an eligible graduate program may be eligible to receive assistance under the Federal Family Education Loan or Direct Loan programs for such enrollment for no longer than one 12-month period.

Procedure

  1. The student obtains the Statement of Intent and Understanding for Graduate Preparatory Coursework online, under the “Other Forms” option of the drop-down menu, under the “Graduate Preparatory Coursework Statement” heading.
  2. The student (and advisor where applicable) completes this form and returns it to the address noted on the form.
  3. Financial Aid and Scholarship Services staff determine whether the student is otherwise eligible for financial aid.
  4. If the student is deemed eligible, staff prepare a subsidized and/or unsubsidized loan package for the student at fifth year undergraduate levels for a 12-month period or less.
