About the Program
The Young Writers Program (YWP) is a part of Arizona State University’s Office of Youth Preparation and its mission to maximize educational opportunities for Arizona students through the development and implementation of programs that support the K-12 community.
YWP’s focus is to provide arts-based opportunities for Arizona students in grades 4-12 to experience writing as a powerful means of self-discovery and expression.
YWP operates primarily in schools and community-based organizations where Master of Fine Arts students from ASU’s Creative Writing Program visit classrooms to lead students through innovative writing lessons during artistic residencies, ranging in length from three to six weeks.
The Young Writers Program:
- Promotes writing confidence
- Encourages the development of imagination
- Emphasizes original ideas
- Provides an opportunity to explore the functions and values of writing
- Creates a context for the study of language and literature
