English Placement Test
- Information
- The English Placement Test used to place an ASU student into a first-year composition course is
the English section of the ACT Assessment. The ACT Assessment user handbook states that the English
test:
"Measures the student's understanding of the conventions of standard written English
in punctuation, grammar and sentence structure and the student's ability to make the kinds of
decisions made by good writers related to strategy, organization and style. Spelling, vocabulary
and rote recall of rules of grammar are not tested."

- Schedule
- Beginning on March 1, 2008, this exam will be replaced by the ACCUPLACER
exam. For more information and available test dates, please see our ACCUPLACER
web page.
- Cost
- There is no fee for the English Placement Test at ASU.
- Time
- The ACT English test contains 75 multiple choice questions. Although the test is 45 minutes, a student
should plan to spend at least 75 minutes for the total appointment to complete necessary paperwork,
receive verbal instructions prior to the exam, and take the test.
- Register
- Call or come by our office to schedule a test date. Appointments must be made no later than 4:30 pm,
one working day before the requested test date. You must provide your ASU identification number at the
time of registration.
- Reschedule
- Call or come by our office to reschedule or cancel your test date.
- Retake
- The English placement test can only be taken once. No retests are permitted.
- Admission
- On the day of the test, the student must present an original, valid form of photo ID. A photocopy is
not acceptable. Examples of acceptable forms of ID would be a driver's license, passport or student ID.
The name on the photo ID must match the registered name.
- Students must report no later than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. No one will
be admitted once test booklets are distributed. No cell phones are allowed.
