ACCUPLACER
Placement Test for First-year English Composition Courses
- Information
- Admitted ASU students who have not sent official ACT or SAT scores to ASU may need to take the WritePlacer
section of the ACCUPLACER for placement into a first-year English composition course. Information regarding university testing
requirements and first-year composition placement can be found in the ASU General
Catalog.
- The ACCUPLACER website describes the test as follows: “
This test measures your ability to write effectively, which is critical to academic success. Your writing sample will be scored on the basis of how effectively it communicates a whole message to the readers for the stated purpose. Your score will based on your ability to express, organize, and support your opinions and ideas, not the position you take on the essay topic.” Additional information concerning the written essay may be found on the College Board

- Scores are available immediately after completion of the exam. Scores for WritePlacer exams taken prior to May 12, 2009 range from 0 to 12. Placement into an English composition course is made on the following basis:

- A WritePlacer Plus score of 7 or below = WAC 101 or WAC 107
- A WritePlacer Plus score of 8, 9, or 10 = ENG 101 or ENG 107
- A WritePlacer Plus score of 11 or 12 = ENG 105
- A new version of ACCUPLACER was put into place on May 13, 2009. For ACCUPLACER exams taken on or after this date, the essay scores will range from 0 to 8. Placement into an English
composition course will be made on the following basis:

- A WritePlacer Plus score of 4 or below = WAC 101 or WAC 107
- A WritePlacer Plus score of 5 to 7 = ENG 101 or ENG 107
- A WritePlacer Plus score of 8 = ENG 105
- University Schedule
- Students from any ASU campus may take the English Placement
test by appointment on the Tempe campus. YOU
MUST CHECK IN AT LEAST 15 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT TIME TO BE
ADMITTED! The test is also offered on the
Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic,
and
West campuses by appointment only. Please see the appropriate campus schedule
for details.
- Tempe Campus Schedule
- English Placement test sessions are by reservation only, which
assures that the student will have a seat for the exam. Make your reservations by calling 480-965-7146
as soon as possible. These sessions will occur at Suite 204, on the following dates:
- November 16 at 9:00 AM
- November 20 at 9:00 AM
- November 24 at 9:00 AM & 10:00 AM
- December 3 at 9:30 AM
- December 14 at 9:00 AM
- December 16 at 3:00 PM
- December 22 at 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM
- December 28 at 3:00 PM
- December 30 at 1:00 PM
- December 31 at 1:00 PM
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
UTSS has moved to 1130 E University Dr, Suite 204 in Tempe. Parking is available while you are testing.
- Downtown Campus Schedule
- Students may schedule to test at the Downtown Phoenix campus
by calling 480-965-7146 at least one day before the scheduled test date, subject to availability. ACCUPLACER exams will be administered on the Downtown Campus in UCENT 256 on the following dates:
- September 18 at 3:00 pm
- October 30 at 3:00 pm
- November 13 at 3:00 pm
- Polytechnic Campus Schedule
- Students may schedule to test at the Polytechnic campus by calling 480-965-7146 at least one day before the scheduled test date, subject to availability. Testing takes place in CTR 152 on the Polytechnic campus:
- September 23 at 9:00 am
- October 20 at 3:30 pm
- November 19 at 3:30 pm
- December 4 at 9:00 am
- West Campus Schedule
- Students planning to study on the ASU West campus may call 602-543-8136 to schedule an
appointment to test on the West campus. Testing Services on the West Campus is open Monday through Friday through the month of June. Effective July 1, 2009, the office will be open Monday and Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The office is located in the Welcome Center (WC).
- Cost
- There is no fee for this placement test for current or incoming ASU students.
- Time
- Students will have 60 minutes to type an essay to a prompt. Students should allow about 90 minutes
for the total appointment time to complete necessary paperwork, receive instructions prior to the exam and
take the test.
- Register
- Call or come by our office to schedule a test date. Appointments must be
made no later than 4:30 pm, one working day before the requested test
date. You must provide your ASU identification number (the 10-digit number
starting with a "1") at the time of registration.
- Register to take the test at an institution outside of the Phoenix/Tempe metro area
- The student must locate a proctor at an educational institution who is
willing and able to administer the exam. The student will be responsible
for paying any test administration or proctoring fees. ASU does not charge
to administer the exam and will not pay any fees for tests that are delivered
remotely.
- The student will need to print two forms: the Request
for Remote ACCUPLACER Testing and the Proctor
Security Agreement. The Request for Remote ACCUPLACER Testing form
is completed by the student while the Proctor Security Agreement
is completed by the proctor. Both forms must be submitted to ASU.
You MUST allow at least two weeks for testing
arrangements to be completed.
- Reschedule
- Call or come by University Testing Services to reschedule or cancel appointments for testing in our
office. If you have scheduled to take the exam at a remote location, you will need to follow the rules
established by that testing center to reschedule or cancel your appointment.
- Retake
- The ACCUPLACER placement exam can be taken only once. No retests are permitted.
- Admission

- Walk-in testing is not permitted.
- YOU MUST CHECK IN AT LEAST 15 MINUTES BEFORE TEST TIME TO BE ADMITTED! Late
examinees will not be seated.
- On the day of the test, the student must present an original, valid form
of photo ID. A photocopy is not acceptable. Examples of acceptable forms
of ID would be a driver's license, passport or student ID. The name on the
ID must match the registered name.
- No cell phones are allowed.
