PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

Introduction

Arizona State University Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) has determined that some employees may be required to enter environments where contaminants may be present, possibly exposing them to hazards during routine operations or possibly in unique situations during the course of duty. The purpose of this program is to protect ASU employees who work in areas where physical, chemical, or radiological hazards or the potential for these hazards exist by providing the appropriate personal protective equipment .

Applicable ASU Policies

  • EHS 101 - Bloodborne Pathogens and Needlestick Prevention
  • EHS 103 - Hazardous Communication Program
  • EHS 104 - Laboratory Use of Hazardous Chemicals
  • EHS 105 - Personal Protective Equipment
  • EHS 107 - Respiratory Protection
  • EHS 108-01 - Health and Safety Training
  • EHS 201 - Electrical Safety

Applicable ASU Guidelines

  • ASU Hearing Conservation Plan
  • ASU Respiratory Protection Plan

Applicable Regulations

  • 29 CFR 1910.132 - General Requirements
  • 29 CFR 1910.133 - Eye and Face Protection
  • 29 CFR 1910.134 - Respiratory Protection
  • 29 CFR 1910.135 - Head Protection
  • 29 CFR 1910.136 - Occupational Foot Protection
  • 29 CFR 1910.137 - Electrical Protective Equipment
  • 29 CFR 1910.138 - Hand Protection
  • 29 CFR 1910.1450 - Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories

Summary of Requirements

Protective equipment, including personal protective equipment for eyes, face, head and extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices, protective shields and barriers, must be provided by the department. Employees must use and maintain the equipment in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological hazards, or mechanical irritants encountered in a manner capable of causing injury or impairment in the function of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation or physical contact.

Employee-Owned Equipment

The department assures the responsibility of employee-owned equipment's adequacy; including, proper maintenance and sanitation of equipment where employees provide their own protective equipment.

Design

When an employee performs work, all personal protective equipment will have a safe design and construction. All PPE must meet the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) ratings where applicable. (See EHS 105)

Hazard Assessment

The employee's supervisor assesses the workplace to determine if hazards are present, or likely to be present, which requires the use of personal protective equipment. Hazard Assessment forms can be found in the “On-Line Forms” on the EH&S web page.

Training

The department and/or EH&S provide training to each employee who requires PPE. Training Includes:

  • when PPE is necessary
  • what PPE is necessary
  • limitations of the PPE
  • how to properly put on, take off, adjust and wear PPE
  • proper care, maintenance, useful life and disposal of PPE

For assistance in performing a hazard assessment or to schedule training, contact Environmental Health & Safety at 480-965-1823 or the EH&S website http://www.asu.edu/uagc/EHS/

Reporting

The department verifies that:

  • a person performs the required workplace hazard assessment through a written certification that identifies the workplace evaluated
  • a person certifies the evaluation performed
  • a person signs and dates the hazard assessment

Inspections

A person inspects, cleans and maintains PPE at regular intervals so the PPE provides proper protection

Recordkeeping

The supervisor signs the Hazard Assessment forms, which certifies that the process is performed as required by regulation. The forms must be maintained with departmental records.

Written Program

EH&S develops ASU policy and each department develops and implements provision of a written PPE Program.
