Fleet Safety On January 27, 2006, ASU announced via a broadcast email from the Vice President of Administration and Finance that using 12- and 15-passenger vans on ASU business are officially prohibited effective immediately. Depending on each programs transportation needs, vans that seat less than 10 occupants may be used as well as sports utility vehicles (SUVs), mini-vans, and regular passenger vehicles. For large groups, coaches that carry approximately 23 occupants can be rented and come with a professional driver. Please note that drivers who operate high-occupancy vehicles (8 or more occupants including the driver) are required to attend a driver training program. Training is recommended for anyone operating an ASU vehicle. Currently, EH&S offers basic “Defensive Driver” training and will begin offering two new trainings in Spring 2006. “Off-Road Driving” will be available in April for individuals who operate vehicles on dirt roads and over rough terrain. Attendees who satisfactorily complete a course exam will receive a certification from the National Safety Council. “Coaching the SUV Driver” will launch in May 2006 and is tailored to the unique attributes of SUVs. For more information on driver training requirements, reference policies EHS 108-02: Defensive Driver Training and EHS 108-03: Training for Operation of High-Occupancy Vehicles. Individuals can register for training courses, at the Loss Prevention & Training page. Select the appropriate campus for class dates and times.
