In 1970, the College of Design moved into its own building (now the South Building), arranged on a courtyard space shared with Fine Arts. As the college grew, its programs spilled out into numerous available spaces on and off campus. In 1989, an addition (the North building) was completed and the programs of the college moved in to one complex, joined by “The Bridge,” a meeting and studio review space for students and faculty. Additional space used by the college is located in the adjacent Tower Center.

The ground floor of the South Building houses the Gallery of Design, one of eight university galleries and museums. It provides premium space for traveling exhibitions as well as exhibitions of student and faculty work. In the Gallery lobby is a flatscreen moniter that features a rotating gallery of current student projects and announcements of upcoming events and lectures.

The Herberger Center for Design Research, the Office of the Dean, and Student Advising are also located in the South building.
