Design South

In 1970, the South Building housed the design studio and classrooms for what is now the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. It was arranged on a courtyard space shared with the School of Arts. As the college grew, its programs spilled out into numerous available spaces on and off campus. In 1989, an addition (the North building) was completed and the programs of the college moved in to one complex, joined by “The Bridge,” a meeting and studio review space for students and faculty. Additional space used by the college is located in the adjacent Tower Center.

The ground floor of the South Building houses the Gallery of Design, one of eight university galleries and museums. It provides premium space for traveling exhibitions as well as exhibitions of student and faculty work. In the Gallery lobby is a flatscreen monitor that features a rotating gallery of current student projects and announcements of upcoming events and lectures.

The Herberger Institute Research Center and student advising are located in the South building.
