Design North

This award-winning expansion to the design building opened in 1989, more than doubling the space available for instruction, research and service activities. Research and special project rooms include design studios, lighting laboratory, materials resource center, solar instrumentation laboratory and a solar roof deck work area that doubles as a daylight testing area.

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is especially proud of its digital imaging lab, which gives students access to computer-controlled laser cutting and large format digital printing. This building is also home to the college’s Architecture and Environmental Design Library, which has a spacious and welcoming interior. It provides access to books, periodicals, reference materials and product catalogs. The library also has a special collections area that includes the Archival Drawings Collection.

Also housed in this building is individual studio workspace for graduate students, and Charlie’s Café, which opens to an outdoor terrace for sitting and relaxing.
