Phoenix Urban Research Laboratory

The Phoenix Urban Research Laboratory (PURL), an extension of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, is situated on the two top floors of the historic Security Building in downtown Phoenix. The laboratory is a research center focused on seeking solutions to the most pressing design problems facing cities today and the enhancement of the civic realm. PURL is a think tank where decision makers, city leaders, community groups, visiting experts and students can engage in productive dialogue about the future of the city and region. PURL creates a venue for research into the urban issues of civic space, the responsible use of resources, campus/city connections, infill and mixed-use development, housing, arts and culture, gentrification, historic preservation, landscape urbanism and the challenge of developing a sustainable desert metropolis.
