Hassayampa Academic Village

Hassayampa Academic Village opened on the Tempe campus in the fall of 2006 and earned a Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™. A suite-style living complex housing 1,900 students, Hassayampa offers students many state-of-the-art amenities throughout its five residence halls. Community kitchens, study areas and courtyards, wireless zones, LCD monitors, in-room Ethernet ports, tutoring, and classrooms onsite are just a few of the features that attract students to Hassayampa, ASU’s first LEED-certified, on-campus residence.

Hassayampa earned its LEED Silver certification because it incorporates several green building features into its design. Among these features are reflective roofs and paving materials (which reduce the urban heat island effect), low-flow faucets and toilets that reduce the building’s water use by 40 percent compared to a conventional building of its size, and occupancy sensors and window shades that reduce Hassayampa’s energy needs by 25 percent compared to a conventional building. The landscaping around Hassayampa uses native and drought resistant species that reduce water needed for irrigation purposes on the site by 50%. During its construction, over 50 percent of Hassayampa’s construction waste was recycled; and a significant proportion of its construction materials contain recycled content and/or were manufactured locally.
