Ecuador
 
Dates: May 31 - June 21, 2007
Cost: $1868
Summary: This experience will allow participants to explore the flora and fauna of one of the most biodiverse locations on Earth, and to learn with hands-on research experiences.
Additional Information
Location: QUITO MAY 31 - JUNE 1 & JUNE 21
Upon arriving in and prior to departing Ecuador, we will spend one full day in the capital city of Ecuador, where we will explore the city and local culture.

YANAYACU BIOLOGICAL RESERVE JUNE 2 - 5
Yanayacu (meaning black river) lies on the eastern slopes of the Andes and we will spend time there exploring the cloud forest to provide a comparison to the rainforest where we will spend the majority of time.

JATUN SACHA BIOLOGICAL RESERVE JUNE 6 - 20
Jatun Sacha is one of the most extensive and diverse tropical rainforest locations of the Amazon rain forest. Here we will live and work on research projects. While there we will take trips to explore local culture.

Eligibility: The program is opened to qualified students interested in immersing themselves in the study of tropical biology. Applications with a $275 non-refundable deposit are due on or before February 5, 2007. Applications will be processed in order of their receipt. Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis.
Academic
Program:
The program consists of two courses. Tropical Biology is a 3 unit course that consists of on-site lectures, field-trips, and other learning activities. Tropical Research, is a 4 unit course that is based on an independent research project that is conducted on site. Written reports, in the form a scientific journal article, are submitted at the end of the summer session after return to the United States. Students will enroll in both courses.

Living
Accommodations:
In Quito, we will stay at a hotel in the heart of the city, with many cultural and shopping experiences nearby. At the biological preserves we will stay at cabins located on site with adjacent dining commons. Students will share rooms and have 3 hot meals per day.
Cost: The cost of $1,868 (subject to possible change) includes: lodging, meals, and transportation while in Ecuador. Not included: ASU tuition and fees, airfare to and from Quito, and personal expenses such as souvenir purchases.
