Argentina

Dates: July 2 - 18, 2007 and July 20 - August 5, 2007
Cost: $2715
Summary: Argentina, the second largest country in South America and seventh in the world in wealth of natural resources, has experienced many political, social, and cultural challenges in recent history.
Additional Information
Location: Tempe, Arizona April 24, 2007 and June 19, 2007
Mandatory pre-departure orientation meetings will be conducted on the ASU Tempe campus. Important details regarding clinical sites, local transportation logistics, housing, course details, options for independent travel, an introduction to Buenos Aires, and group-building activities will be addressed during these pre-departure meetings.

Buenos Aires, Argentina July 5-21, 2007 (Session 1) OR July 25-August 10, 2007
Participants will have opportunities to explore the bustling city of Buenos Aires, the “Paris of South America”, and the vibrant culture that is Argentina. The economic crisis of 2001 transformed Latin America’s most expensive city to one of the most affordable. Planned visits include a wide variety of health care facilities, “hands-on” experiences, walking tours to immerse participants in the architectural heritage, art history, political and immigration history, Tango, and the Porteño culture. Cultural events are planned for Buenos Aires and the surrounding province, including excursions to the Tigre delta and an estancia in the Pampas to experience Gaucho culture. Despite a population of more than 13 million people, much of Buenos Aires is easily navigated by foot or taxi. You must be willing to walk the city—come prepared with good footwear. Some days will be long, requiring considerable walking or standing. As with any large foreign city, it is relatively safe with the proper precautions. The weather during July-August can be chilly as it is winter in Argentina.

Eligibility: This program is open to upper division undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals who are interested in gaining a global perspective on health care delivery in Argentina and Latin America. If you have an interest in health care and enjoy traveling, meeting new people, experiencing different customs, foods, and culture, this experience is for you. If you have never traveled outside the U.S., this is an opportunity to broaden your horizons. Spanish language proficiency is not required, but willingness to attempt to understand and communicate in Spanish is. Applications with a $275 deposit (non-refundable) are due by April 30, 2007. Space in this popular course is limited by the number of available clinical placements so apply early! Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis. Acceptance into the program is contingent on an essay and interview with the Program Director.

Academic
Program:

The course will be delivered in a variety of methods, including seminars by local physicians, physical therapists, historians, and ASU faculty on health care economics and policy, the practice of medicine and rehabilitation sciences, the portrayal of movement in art, and clinical visits tailored to the participants’ interests (orthopedic surgery, general surgery, medicine, pediatrics, physical and occupational therapy clinics, workplace injury rehabilitation, sports medicine facilities, etc.). Most seminars and visits will be conducted in English by ASU faculty. Spanish lectures by host professors will be translated. The following courses will be offered:

KIN 494 Argentina: Health Care Policy, Medicine, and Culture
KIN 598 Argentina: Health Care Policy, Medicine, and Culture

Living
Accommodations:
We will be staying in a small family-owned pension in the heart of Buenos Aires’ Microcentro. Together with the friendliness of our Porteño hosts, this environment allows participants to experience a family-style atmosphere. This Art Deco pension is convenient to grocery stores, laundry, and restaurants. Housing is based on double or triple occupancy with shared bathroom facilities. Wireless Internet access is available in the pension.

Cost: The cost of $2715 (subject to possible change) includes: lodging with breakfast included, transfer to/from EZE airport, some meals, clinic visits, excursions, staff support, course facilities, and ISIC card. Not included: ASU tuition and fees, airfare, passport and visa fees, and personal expenses.
