HEAD COACH - CHRIS MALONE

In August 2007 Chris Malone was announced as the new head coach of the Sun Devil’s Men’s Lacrosse team. He came to ASU, as he believed the team has a talented group of players coming off a great season. He plans to use that momentum to further improve the ASU program. ASU enters the 2008 season with a #6 national ranking in the MCLA.

Chris has five years of prior coaching experience, including two years at Loyola Blakefield High School and three years of the University of Pennsylvania as an assistant coach. As the offensive coordinator at Loyola Blakefield in 2002 and 2007, the team was nationally ranked 5th and 2nd respectively by Inside Lacrosse Magazine. At the University of Pennsylvania, Malone was in charge of offensive players, goalies and recruiting. During his tenure in 2004 they made the NCAA Division I playoff tournament and finished the year ranked 13th in the country. This was Penn’s first tournament appearance since 1989.

Chris’ lacrosse career began at age 8 in Baltimore, MD. He graduated from Loyola Blakefield in Towson, MD in 1997. His career continued at the University of Maryland as a two-time All American midfielder. He led Maryland in goals in 2000 and was a team captain in 2001. He was named a two-time scholar athlete and was a two time recipient of the William Cole memorial Award, which was presented to the most outstanding midfielder at Maryland. He tallied 60 goals and 37 assists in his four-year career in College Park. Chris was a participant in the 1998 NCAA Div. I Championship Game.

After graduating, Chris was selected 10th overall in the Major League Lacrosse draft in 2001 by the New Jersey Pride. He was traded to the Philadelphia Barrage for the 2005 Season. The Chicago Machine selected him in the 2006 expansion draft. That season he had 14 goals and 5 assists in 11 games.

In addition to ASU Men’s Lacrosse, Chris is involved with Starz Lacrosse.

ASSISTANT COACH - Pat Miller

Pat Miller was hired in the spring of the 2008 season as an assistant coach for ASU Men’s Lacrosse under Head Coach Chris Malone.   Miller’s primary role is coaching faceoff’s.

ASU’s record was 15-4 for the 2008 season, including an appearance in a semi-final game of the MCLA National Championship Tournament.  The improvement in faceoffs contributed significantly to the 2008 record.

“After our 3rd game in 2008, it was evident that the team needed to improve its faceoff percentage.  Pat was the first coach that came to mind as he worked with some great faceoff players in the past.  He is a great friend of mine and he makes the coaching staff and the program stronger,” said Malone at the time of Miller’s hiring.

Miller is a part time assistant coach at ASU.  He serves as the head coach at Cardinal Newman High School in Northern California where he has turned around their program. He led the Cardinals to an 8-8 season in 2007 and a 14-3 season in 2008. The team was 0-13 in its first season of varsity lacrosse before Miller took over.  He is also the Founder and Owner of Amplify Your Game.  For more information, please go to www.amplifyyourgame.com

From 2003 through 2004, Miller was an assistant coach at Johns Hopkins University. He worked primarily with the Johns Hopkins' faceoff specialists, while also assisting with the overall offensive game plan.  Miller coached arguably the top faceoff trio in the nation as the Blue Jays finished in the top five in the nation in team faceoff percentage. This trio of players Kyle Harrison, Greg Peyser and Lou Braun has continued their lacrosse careers in the MLL.

He played at Hopkins from 1998-2002. He was a member of 3 teams that advanced to the NCAA Division 1 Final Four (1999, 2000, and 2002). After Graduating from Johns Hopkins University in 2001, Pat continued to play a fifth year while studying for a Master's Degree in Public Health. In 2002 he was presented the W. Taylor Cook Memorial Award, an award held in the Hopkins Hall of Fame, for Strength of Character and Positive Influence on the JHU team.

Head Coach Chris Malone and Pat were classmates at Loyola Blakefield High School in Towson, Maryland.  They were teammates all 4 years playing 1 year on JV and 3 seasons on Varsity.  In 1997, they served as captains together on a team that finished ranked 5th in the country by Inside Lacrosse Magazine.
