The State Press

Description: Official campus daily newspaper (M-F), 12-24 pages per day. The publication includes the weekly State Press Magazine and regular special sections.

Audience: General ASU community and the city of Tempe with a focus on students. Readership is estimated at 45,000 student, faculty and staff each day of publication.

Message: Present important local, national and international news and features; offer advertising space for local vendors, campus members and national corporations; provide editorial space for diverse opinions; and include daily announcements for campus departments and organizations.

Staff: Approximately 70 paid student employees plus several volunteers are responsible each semester for producing the editorial content of the newspaper. They make their own editorial decisions guided by an adviser.

Production process: A student staff of about six, with the guidance of Student Media department staff, are responsible for producing the daily newspaper. Graphic artists work during the day to produce advertisements for the daily newspaper and web site; evening production students are responsible for front page design, magazine design, and pagination of all inside pages. The students work on Apple Macintosh workstations using QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat and other design software.  Once all pages are edited and released, they are converted to PDF and uploaded to our printers ftp site by deadline. Our printer, Intermountain Color (IMC), then prints overnight and our distribution contractor delivers papers to about 140 free distribution racks. All regularly scheduled daily papers are distributed on the Tempe campus, downtown Tempe, the Polytechnic campus, the downtown campus and ASU West.

Photography: Student employees using digital cameras, photograph, scan and color correct photos electronically.

Quantity/time period: We print an average of 18,000 newspapers per day for 31 weeks during fall and spring, and 10 weeks in the summer (summer publications are once a week).

Distribution method: We distribute The State Press to 72 on-campus sites and about 50 sites off-campus and at ASU's Polytechnic Campus. The newspaper is distributed by an independent contractor.

ASU Web Devil

Description: The electronic arm of Student Media, the ASU Web Devil maintains the department's on-line presence, as well as produces its own independent content, including on-line news and features, blogs, student polls, photos and video.

Audience: Primarily aimed at the ASU student and alumni population, although, as an electronic medium, it attracts visitors from around the world. The web site gets about 1 million page views a month.

Message: The Web Devil provides an opportunity for breaking news, interactive features and in-depth stories to be published along with photography and multimedia without space limitations. It offers students the opportunity to experiment with new media to better prepare themselves for potential jobs in the field of on-line journalism.

Staff: Three paid students employees manage the site and work with dozens of student volunteers who contribute content.

Production process: For electronic publication of the State Press, State Press Magazine, the webmaster converts the QuarkXPress pages created by the student production staff into HTML format for the Web. The webmaster then formats the finished HTML pages and creates any additional graphics. The electronic pages and artwork are then sent to AZ Central server at the Arizona Republic, where the Web Devil is housed. This process typically takes between one and three hours, depending on the complexity of the pages involved. All multimedia (video, sound, 3D graphics) is produced in-house using Apple Macintosh and Dell Windows multimedia workstations.

Photography/Artwork: As with the stories, all photography and artwork are produced by students.

Quantity/time period: The electronic versions of The State Press and State Press Magazine are completed and posted on-line around midnight the night before publication. Other sections are updated as needed at various times of day.
