Tibet: April, 1999 -- Stories

Former Tibetan monk, Gaden Tashi, 29, was jailed and tortured by the Chinese Army for protesting the takeover of his homeland. Tashi was not alone in his arrest in 1988 as 750 of the 2,500 monks and nuns who protested against the Chinese government were detained for speaking against Chinese rule. Today, Tashi, as well as many other Tibetans, has taken refuge outside of his country. (Click here for story)

Tibetan Refugee Jhampa Wangdu at age 8 was one of thousands of children who fled Tibet 40 years ago when the Imperial Chinese Army stormed their homeland on the world's highest platuea. Forty years later Wangdu started three schools where Tibetans learn their language. (Click here for story)
