Volleyball team gets smoked on the road

The ASU volleyball team had a very uneventful trip to California this past weekend. The Sun Devils lost both matches to No. 18 USC and No. 11 UCLA.

The match Friday night against USC saw ASU jump ahead, winning the first game 15-12. The Sun Devils hit .306 for the first game but could not maintain that incredible pace. They dropped to .178 for the second game, in which they lost 15-13. The Trojans would win the next two games 15-9 and 15-9. ASU ended up hitting .192 for the match while making 25 errors.

Junior middle blocker Amanda Burbridge led the team with 20 kills and eight digs. Sophomore outside hitter Robyn Mattingly added 11 kills, while junior setter Becky Sidoti and sophomore outside Jami Coughlin added 14 kills.

USC had five players with double-digit kills and hit .216 as a team. Sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Pahl led the team with 18 kills, nine digs and six block assists. Junior outside hitter Kashi Cormier also added 13 kills, 14 digs and one service error. The other three hitters -- juniors Janae Henry, Antoinette Polk and freshman Lauren Killian -- had 11, 10, and 10 kills, respectivly.

USC outblocked ASU 10 blocks to five. USC improved its record to 6-3 and 1-0 in the Pac-10.

Saturday night the Sun Devils faced the Bruins. UCLA defeated ASU in four games 15-1, 15-10, 12-15 and 15-7. The Bruins hit .255 for the match while ASU only hit .122.

The Sun Devils were led by Coughlin, who had 11 kills and 12 digs. Mattingly contributed 10 kills and four digs. ASU, as a team, made an unbelievable 30 errors for the match.

UCLA had four players hit in double digits. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Bolwes and Kristee Porter had 18 kills to lead the match and their team. Senior middle blocker Tamika Johnson and junior Elisabeth Bachman had 14 and 12 kills, respectively.

The Sun Devils fell to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10.
