When the San Francisco 49ers enter Tempe to play the Cardinals today, police expect tremendous traffic problems and congested streets in Tempe, especially near Sun Devil Stadium.
"Most of the fans are going to use State Route 202 and exit at Scottsdale Road," said Tempe police Sgt. Dave Lind. "This is causing a major congestion problem and could cause (police) to close this off ramp. We (will) have a number of alternate routes we would like people to use."
Lind said police recommend that fans avoid this highly congested location and that people driving home from work use other routes home.
Police suggested that football fans should arrive early and use one of the following alternate routes:
Fans driving from the north:
* Southbound McClintock Drive to westbound Apache Boulevard to northbound Rural Road;
* Southbound Priest Drive to eastbound University Drive to northbound Rural Road;
* If Apache Boulevard is congested, drive a mile south to Broadway Road.
Fans driving from the south:
* Northbound Rural Road;
* Northbound Mill Avenue;
* Northbound McClintock Drive to westbound Broadway Road or westbound Apache Boulevard or westbound University Drive;
* Northbound Priest Drive to eastbound Broadway Road or eastbound University Drive.
Fans driving from the east:
* Eastbound US Highway 60 to northbound McClintock Drive or northbound Rural or northbound Mill Avenue;
* Eastbound Broadway to northbound McClintock Drive or northbound Rural Road or northbound Mill Avenue;
* Eastbound Apache Boulevard to northbound McClintock Drive or northbound Rural Road or northbound Mill Avenue;
