"This cartoon symbolizes the lack of tolerance, as well as the outright ignorance that exists on this campus. Not everyone is gay. However, we must appreciate the fact that some people are. Slandering and saying negative things about gays is absolutely no different than slandering Blacks, Jews, Hispanics, etc. If badmouthing other groups is wrong, so is badmouthing gays."

--Lukas Herbert
Senior, Geography

Editor's Note: Due to overwhelming response regarding the March 6 editorial cartoon and space limitations, we have sampled these comments from the more than 60 letters received.

"Do not make me think that the private interests of 'getting published' are more important than protecting the community from hate and violence. The cartoons are often funny, entertaining and thought provoking; often enjoyable, so let's keep them that way without insulting the readers in such a violent manner."

-- Joshua Carr
Senior, Political Science

"I resent the fact that I and many other students on campus are put in a position where their tuition dollars are being used to support a paper that insults them."

-- Dorian Smith
Junior, Mathematics

"The fact that you have free speech and that you are, 'only expressing opposing views' does not make what you are doing any less reprehensible or less grotesque nor does it absolve you from blame for wrongful and hate-filled muckraking."

-- Mark Prestegard
ASU Staff

"With the March 6 hate cartoon, the State Press covers itself, and the University that supports it, in shame."

--Willis Buckingham
Professor of English
