Commuter 101 at Off-Campus & Commuter Student Services

New for Fall 2009

ASU is a resource rich institution. Students can benefit greatly by learning about programs and services that can enhance their college experience. The purpose of this program is to introduce students to the programs and services provided by the Off-Campus & Commuter Student Services Center (OCCSS) and provide an introduction to various resources on campus. All topics will be presented as informal information sessions. Stop by and meet other students and gain some valuable knowledge. This is a great opportunity to make friends and to get the most out of your college experience. Below you will find workshops available through the Commuter 101 program. Off-Campus & Commuter Student Services:  We know that living off-campus (alone or with roommate), commuting from home, working while taking classes or managing a family can be complicated.  Off-Campus & Commuter Student Services (OCCSS) is here to help students with those challenges, transitions and questions.  Empowerment, partnership, and personalization of programs and services are characteristics of our efforts.

LSS & Success Coaching:  Discover the Success Coaching Program, and learn what every commuter student should know about it:  what it is, how to be part of it, and most of all, how it can help you!  Tools, resources, other Learning Support Services offerings and partnerships will be shared.  Take away a useful tool that we will work with in the session.

Intramurals:  Intramural Sports offers students the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports, on either a competitive or recreational level.  Leagues and tournaments occur throughout the school year in numerous indoor and outdoor sports.  Learn more about how to get involved with our program including signing up a team and becoming a free agent.

Student Organizations:  Enhance your ASU experience by getting involved!  Come learn about the various student organizations and other involvement opportunities including Community Service, Programming & Activities Board, Fraternities & Sororities and Student Government.

Student Work Opportunities:  The Student Employment Office provides resources for eligible students to locate on-and off-campus employment opportunities in order to meet their education and living expenses.

Health Services/Insurance:  What is there for me? Let’s discuss the health programs and services available to you right on campus!

Safety Escort:  The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) considers safety the most important services they offer through the Safety Escort Service (SES).  SES provides students, faculty and staff a safe transportation option to and from any location on campus from 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Monday thru Sunday.

Career Services:  “Students Who Use Career Services Fare Better in Job Market”.  What’s the difference between new college graduates who have a job and those who don’t?  According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the “haves” and the “have not’s” are distinguished in part by their use of their campus career center.  Don’t miss out on learning what your Career Services can do for you!

Study Abroad:  “The ASU Study Abroad Office (SAO) offers students the unique opportunity to increase their sphere of influence through study abroad.  SAO administers more than 250 study abroad programs in more than 60 countries around the world.  This presentation will outline the necessary steps for participating in one of ASU’s many study abroad opportunities.

Devils Advocates:  Do you love ASU? And, do you want to tell everyone about it? Learn all about Devils’ Advocates and how you can join! Devils’ Advocates provide campus tours to prospective students, families and community members….join us to make the most of your ASU experience!

Student Legal Services:  This presentation will touch on Landlord-Tenant issues, traffic tickets, family law, alcohol-related offenses, including DUI, and consumer issues, among other topics.

ASU Police:  Learn about what frequent crimes occur on campus and how this happens. Pick up tips to improve your personal safety, and the safety of your vehicle (including bicycles). If a problem occurs, know your options on how and when to get help. Take personal responsibility to make this campus a safer place for all of us.
