ACTIVITIES

How can I get involved?
Las Casas puts on weekly events for you to participate in. These activities may be social, education or both. Either way there is always something to do here on campus! If you are looking to get involved in Student Government within Las Casas, check out the Residence Hall Association or RHA for short. RHA is the governing body of students that represent the voice of the community to University Officials, as well as providing assistance and activities to the Las Casas Community.

Will we go to football games at the Tempe campus together?
Yes, ASU's West campus has a bus that shuttles students to the football games at ASU Tempe. Students can purchase a seat on the bus and go to the Sun Devil games without the hassle of dealing with parking and traffic.

What recreation/sports facilities are available?
ASU's West campus has a fitness center, soccer field, sand volleyball court, basketball court, and racquetball courts. The fitness center organizes intramural sports, and Las Casas has a swimming pool on-site. In addition, there is a new recreation complex under construction just south of Las Casas. This new facility will feature baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and picnic areas and will open during the 07-08 academic year.

CABLE


What does cable ready/cable connections mean?
It means that basic cable and Internet are available in the living room and bedrooms. You must provide your own television cable, as well as Ethernet cable (see below for internet access Ethernet info).

COMPUTING


Is there a computer lab in the residence halls?
Along with a variety of computing services on campus, there is a computer lab in the Las Casas Community Center. It is equipped with a laser printer and a number of PCs.

What do I need to have computer access in my apartment?
You will need a Windows or Macintosh computer with a current operating system, an Ethernet card or built-in Ethernet capability, and a standard Ethernet cable (with RJ45 connector) to get connected. Your computer should have the most recent security updates installed (available from Microsoft or Apple) prior to connecting to the network and you will be expected to install and maintain anti-virus software that is provided by the university. The cost for network access is covered by each student's rent. Detailed information on how to connect and how to install the required security updates is available.

COMMUNITY CENTER


What is the Community Center?
The Community Center is a gathering area for Las Casas residents to use for multiple social activities; e.g., hall meetings, interest group gatherings, etc. A TV, VCR/DVD, stereo system, couches, chairs, and tables are available in the Community Center. The Community Center also includes a standard classroom and computer classroom. Residents' mailboxes are located in the Community Center, as are the Las Casas management offices.

COSTS


The non-refundable application and processing fee for Las Casas is $125.

DINING


Although it's great that the Las Casas apartments have kitchens, I’m not much of a cook. Are there meal plans available to me?
Yes, there are a few meal plans available through Aramark - the on-campus café. The meal plans can be customized to include a variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner options. Please call Aramark for more information at 602.543.3669..

DISABILITY ACCESS


What services are provided within the hall for wheelchair-bound students?
There are elevators and handicap accessible suites. Individual students should let Residence Life staff know of any special needs associated with their disabilities so that appropriate accommodations may be provided.

LAUNDRY FACILITIES


Where will I do my laundry?
There will be one laundry room located on each floor (six total); each laundry room will be equipped with three washers and three dryers.

LICENSE


What licensing options are available?
There are fall, spring, academic year, and summer options available.

Is there an option of moving into Las Casas later than the first day of fall classes?
Students will need to inquire directly with Las Casas to negotiate these arrangements, depending on the availability of a room.

PARKING


May I bring my car?
Yes, a parking lot has been provided for residents of Las Casas. The parking areas are located on the north, west, and south sides of the facility.

Do I have to purchase a parking permit for my car?
If you are interested in parking your vehicle at Las Casas, a parking permit may be purchased at the parking services center at the West Campus.

Where can my guests park?
Limited metered guest spots are available. The parking meters for these spots are enforced Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.

PETS


Can my pet live with me in the residence halls?
No pets, except fish and approved service animals, are permitted in Las Casas. Fish tanks larger than 10 gallons are not permitted. Service animals have received specialized training and are certified to assist individuals with a documented disability who need service animal assistance in daily living.

RESIDENTS


Who can live in the residence halls?
All ASU students (enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at ASU) are eligible to live in Las Casas. The University highly recommends that students live at the campus of their major.

Are freshmen required to live on-campus?
Freshmen are expected to live on campus; however, we recognize that housing is currently limited. Availability will be on a first come first serve basis. Living on campus acquaints you with new people from diverse backgrounds pursuing a variety of academic interests. Many of our residents acknowledge they made their best friends while living in the residence halls. Also, living on campus provides an environment for academic success as well as allowing students to develop leadership skills through the various residence hall organizations. It is also very convenient to live on campus where you are in close proximity to the library, faculty, classrooms, and computer labs.

ROOMS


What type of living facilities are available?
All dwellings are apartment style with kitchens and living rooms. Each apartment is either a 2 bedroom shared-room apartment or a 4 bedroom single-room apartment.

Are halls single-sex or co-ed?
All residence halls are co-educational. Men and women live in separate units. There is no family housing.

May I choose my roommate(s)?
Yes, mutual roommate requests are granted when each person submits a roommate request in writing, when space is available, and when requests are mutual.

If I don't request a specific roommate, how is my roommate assigned?
Roommate assignments are based on your answers to the questions on the roommate matching form regarding your preferences and habits. We also try to place people together who are the same age or class level.

ROOM FURNISHINGS


What does a fully equipped kitchen include?
It includes a frost-free refrigerator with icemaker, microwave, stove, dishwasher, garbage disposal, and double-sided stainless steel sink.

What can I expect to find in a fully furnished unit?
A couch, chair, end table, coffee table, TV stand, desk, desk chair, dresser, and bed (full-size bed in the 4-bedroom unit, twin-size bed in the 2-bedroom unit) are provided.

What should I bring to my new room?
Students in Las Casas have discovered that it is a good idea to call or e-mail their future roommates when planning their move. It helps to discuss who is bringing what to avoid duplication. If you need a starting place, please review our "what to bring" list.

SMOKING


May I smoke in my room?
No, Las Casas is a smoke-free facility. Smoking is not permitted in or within 30 feet of the facility or in the hallways, rooms, common areas, or unit areas. There are specially designated outdoor smoking areas.

STAFF MANAGING


Who supervises the residence halls?
The Coordinator of Residential Life is the housing professional who is responsible for the overall operation of the housing community. The Community Director directly supervises all student staff, assists with working through conduct and roommate concerns and serves as a resource to all residents. The Administrative Assistant is responsible for student accounts and room assignments. There are also paraprofessionals (Community Assistants) who coordinate activities, advise about university resources, enforce policies, and assist residents in their transition to college life.

VISITORS


May I have visitors who stay overnight?
Yes, visitors are welcome after consideration is given to your roommates' needs and rights. The privilege of 24-hour guest visitation is extended to all residents; however, there may be units or floors that vote to modify this policy for their living area. Guests are limited to a maximum of three nights and must be at least 18 years old.
