Stay Healthy This Semester - Avoid the Flu

ASU students can keep these key points in mind during flu season to avoid getting sick:

  • Pay attention to basic hygiene. Wash hands frequently with a 60-percent alcohol-based hand cleaner. Or, if a hand cleaner is not available, wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 15 seconds – about the time it takes to sing “Row, row, row your boat.”
  • Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissues or your sleeve, never your hand. Flu and colds spread from the hand, not the mouth.

Flu Prevention Tips

Wash your hands frequently

  • Use a 60% alcohol-based hand rub
  • Wash for at least 15 seconds

Cover up when you cough or sneeze

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue every time you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue away after one use
  • Wash your hands
  • If you don’t have a tissue, sneeze or cough into your sleeve, not your hands since germs spread more easily through hands

When around sick people

  • Disinfect surfaces such as phones, keyboards, doorknobs and faucets frequently
  • Wear a face mask when in close proximity to people with the flu and avoid close contact

Keep a supply of flu medicines available

  • Cold/Flu kits may be purchased at the Campus Health Service Pharmacy and at the Resident Hall stores

Watch the Health Services website, State Press, and My ASU Announcements for the upcoming H1N1 vaccination clinics on the ASU campuses! Seasonal Flu Mist is also available at Campus Health Service.
