MOVE-OUT PARKING

Parking

When moving out of the residence halls, remember to follow these parking rules:

Be sure not to park in any restricted areas, such as reserved or disabled stalls, stalls designated for ASU vehicles, or alongside red curbs. Move-out can be a hectic time, but abiding by these simple rules will reduce the amount of stress for everyone and prevent any citations.

Do not drop off storage containers such as “PODS” or other portable storage devices. These large receptacles take up parking spaces that are needed for vehicles, and PTS cannot provide close access or security for them.

RETURNING GATE ACCESS CARD
If you are moving out of the residence halls at the end of the spring semester and currently park in a structure that requires use of a gate access card, you must return that card to the Permit Sales office, located on the first floor of University Towers, to avoid a $25 fee.

PARKING PERMITS
If you are moving out of the residence halls but will be taking classes on campus during the summer, you can exchange your residence hall permit for a commuter permit at the Permit Sales office.

If you will be living in a residence hall for the 2008-09 academic year, look for a parking permit application to be mailed to you during the summer.

If you will be living off campus during the 2008-09 academic year and will need to purchase a commuter permit, you may do so online at https://parking.asu.edu beginning June 9.

Supporting Global Literacy at ASU- Donate your books

Books

April 30 - May 7, 2008
Look for donation bins placed at the main offices of your residence halls on campus.

Better World Books and your local ASU Golden Key International Honor Society have teamed up to allow ASU students to donate their school books in support of global literacy. Just 250 books can sponsor an illiterate child and help him/her create a future through education while 1000 books is all that is needed to fill a library in Africa.

All donated books will either be given directly to those in need around the world or sold online to create a sustainable funding stream to support the missions of literacy programs.

Better World Books has raised over 10 million books to this day and now we, as ASU students, have the opportunity to make our world a better, and more literate, one.

Questions, please contact Matt Kolano, President, Golden Key International Honor Society mkolano@asu.edu.

Returning Home for the Summer

Summer

You've succeeded at passing your classes, making new friends, and living on your own. So why do you feel like a little kid when you go home for the summer? Your time back home may be challenging because of the growth and changes you have made while at ASU. In addition, your family may have changed as well and your relationship with them will likely change, too. This can be a great experience, if you are ready and make a few preparations.

Here are some strategies and tips for negotiating your time at home:

Prepare for change - College students can experience a rough summer at home because they are blind-sided by change. Being prepared for it (setting your mind for it and making plans to smooth the transition) is the first, most important step.

You've changed - You may be more independent than you were in high school. Your family may not be ready for this change in you. They may expect you to need them as much as you did before you left. Most likely, it is a difficult transition for them to accept you as an independent person with views different from theirs, a person who can stand on his/her own.

TIP: Give them some time and ease them into it. Give them a chance to be proud of your independence. Remember this is as much a transition for them as for you.

Appearance - Not only have your views changed, you may not even look the same! This can be a real shock to your family and high school friends.

TIP: If you've made physical changes (especially tattoos or piercings), let your family know before you come home. Be sure to emphasize that this is a time to try new things, and you're trying a new look. Knowing this is an experiment, may make that new look easier to accept.

Talking to your family - Many problems can be avoided by a simple conversation. Start including your family in your new life by talking about it. Talk to them about your major, your new friends and your goals. Your family members really are interested in your life. This is a time that is both scary and exciting. You will make it less scary by talking openly with them.

Whose house is it? - The place you grew up in will become less "my house" and more "my parent's house" every time you go home. More and more, your place will be where you live and keep your stuff at school. Just as you want friends to respect your place when they come where you live, respect your parent's place as well.

TIP: This will call for re-negotiating expectations for living and house rules. Do the "old" rules still apply? Will more or less be expected? Discuss curfews. Your summer will be much more enjoyable if you work these things out up front. Be ready for some rules to stay the same. If you think they should change, suggest a compromise. Work out the compromises that best suit you and your parents.

Old Friends - You think you've changed? They've changed too. These changes may strengthen some of your former relationships while weakening or eliminating others.
o TIP: Keep in touch, but don't hold on if the relationship is no longer rewarding. You may find you connect with people you didn't before. Friendships should never hold you back, but support you on your new journey.

Counseling & Consultation is available to help you prepare for your upcoming transition home or any other concerns you may have at the end of the year. Please call (480) 965-6146 to schedule an appointment or to speak to a counselor.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT

Summer Interviews!

Summer

Things are very busy now with the end of the semester. Very soon though, you might find you have a lot of time on your hands. Make the most of your summer by doing some informal research on careers that interest you.
Don’t be shy. Schedule some informational interviews with professionals you respect in your field.

Use your network of existing contacts to get an introduction and then make an appointment. Discover undisclosed industry details such as a sense of the job setting or what tasks will you accomplish in a typical work day.

You may be invited to a job shadow, apply for an internship, or be introduced to others in the field.

Visit our web site to learn all about who to contact, what to ask them and how to follow up after the interview. www.asu.edu/career or call:
