Congratulations Students!

Can you believe that you only have one more week left?! Keep up the amazing work…we know you can do it!
Before you leave, we have a few helpful reminders for you.
Just in case you didn’t know, your Sun Dollars do not expire. This means you can save your remaining Sun Dollars to spend over the summer or save them for fall semester.
Check our website often www.suncard1.com for new locations and updates. If you happen to lose your Sun Card this summer, don’t worry. You can suspend it on-line (as listed above) or, it can be replaced at one of our four campus locations around the valley, for a replacement fee of $25.
We look forward to seeing you at ASU next year and are excited to help you throughout your entire college experience. You should be very proud of your accomplishments and deserve a summer full of relaxation. Have a fun and safe summer and don’t forget to add Sun Dollars when you get back!

Returning Home for the Summer

You've succeeded at passing your classes, making new friends, and living on your own. So why do you feel like a little kid when you go home for the summer? Your time back home may be challenging because of the growth and changes you have made while at ASU. In addition, your family may have changed as well and your relationship with them will likely change, too. This can be a great experience, if you are ready and make a few preparations.
Here are some strategies and tips for negotiating your time at home:
Prepare for change - College students can experience a rough summer at home because they are blind-sided by change. Being prepared for it (setting your mind for it and making plans to smooth the transition) is the first, most important step.
You've changed - You may be more independent than you were in high school. Your family may not be ready for this change in you. They may expect you to need them as much as you did before you left. Most likely, it is a difficult transition for them to accept you as an independent person with views different from theirs, a person who can stand on his/her own.
TIP: Give them some time and ease them into it. Give them a chance to be proud of your independence. Remember this is as much a transition for them as for you.
Appearance - Not only have your views changed, you may not even look the same! This can be a real shock to your family and high school friends.
TIP: If you've made physical changes (especially tattoos or piercings), let your family know before you come home. Be sure to emphasize that this is a time to try new things, and you're trying a new look. Knowing this is an experiment, may make that new look easier to accept.
Talking to your family - Many problems can be avoided by a simple conversation. Start including your family in your new life by talking about it. Talk to them about your major, your new friends and your goals. Your family members really are interested in your life. This is a time that is both scary and exciting. You will make it less scary by talking openly with them.
Whose house is it? - The place you grew up in will become less "my house" and more "my parent's house" every time you go home. More and more, your place will be where you live and keep your stuff at school. Just as you want friends to respect your place when they come where you live, respect your parent's place as well.
TIP: This will call for re-negotiating expectations for living and house rules. Do the "old" rules still apply? Will more or less be expected? Discuss curfews. Your summer will be much more enjoyable if you work these things out up front. Be ready for some rules to stay the same. If you think they should change, suggest a compromise. Work out the compromises that best suit you and your parents.
Old Friends - You think you've changed? They've changed too. These changes may strengthen some of your former relationships while weakening or eliminating others.
o TIP: Keep in touch, but don't hold on if the relationship is no longer rewarding. You may find you connect with people you didn't before. Friendships should never hold you back, but support you on your new journey.
Counseling & Consultation is available to help you prepare for your upcoming transition home or any other concerns you may have at the end of the year. Please call (480) 965-6146 to schedule an appointment or to speak to a counselor.
