dot CENTER NEIGHBORHOOD

Center NH

By Cory A. Shapiro
Assistant Director for Residential Education

Hello Center Neighborhood! It is hard to believe that the year is almost over. As we all look back, we have so much to be proud of as we look back at our accomplishments as residents and as a large community. Center Neighborhood was the winner of the Fall semester Spirit Competition and is the proud recipient of building enhancements that are anticipated in the Summer and/or early Fall. In November, residents across campus shared their perspectives on living in the residence halls through the EBI surveys. Our neighborhood received the highest rate of return of all neighborhoods at ASU’s four campuses. The Center Hall Council was recently recognized by the National Residence Hall Honorary as the REGIONAL Organization of the Month for all institutions in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho for the month of February. Our Community Assistant staff and Center Hall Council continue to put on amazing programs and opportunities to help connect you all with the ASU experience. All in all, a VERY eventful 2007-2008 academic year!

I want to take a moment to thank all of the individuals who worked together to bring you the best experience possible in the neighborhood this year. Thank you to Jessica Cheatwood-Alvarez, Michael DiGirolamo, and Adam Stuart as your three professional staff members and their 26 Community Assistants for always providing a safe, educational experience for all of you! Thank you to our desk assistants, ambassador, and paraprofessionals for contributing to your residential experience! Thank you to our wonderful Center Hall Council members and officers, under the leadership of President Alex Hohman and Programmer Jessica Andrews for getting many of you involved in fun programming and leadership opportunities! Thank you to the Neighborhood Management Team and our Residential College partners for working with Residential Life to provide you all a holistic experience as ASU students! Finally, thank you to ALL OF YOU for being a part of our wonderful neighborhood and for being positive role models for one another!!

Have a wonderful and safe summer, and we will look forward to seeing many of you next year as members of the Barrett Honors College, leaders in the Athena and Herberger Residential Colleges, Community Assistants, or RHA/Hall Council officers. And for those of you who are moving to other residence halls, Cholla, Towers, Vista del Sol, moving off-campus, or graduating, I wish you all the best! Please let us know if we can ever be of any assistance.

Center Hall Council

Center NH

Center Hall Council has had an exciting month! At the end of March, some brave Center souls came out to compete in Center Fear Factor. They ate a lot of yummy things, the favorite being the Taco Bell smoothie! Jackie Fitton and Eric Starbuck went on represent Center at ASU Fear Factor and placed third!

Many of Center’s hottest residents came out to participate in the Mr. Center pageant, in the formalwear, talent, and swimsuit categories! Center residents also got to cool off from the heat at Water Wars! The event included a slip and slide, a huge squirt gun fight, and other fun activities to cool off from the heat. A group of Center kids also attended the RHA turn-around-trip to Disneyland! They all had an amazing time and represented Center!

In Center, we also spent a large sum of money to purchase things that will improve our halls next year, including new vacuums, DVD players, some new cookware, and other exciting things!

To wrap up the year, on Tuesday, April 29, Hall Council is partnering with Devils After Dark to bring the residents Stressed = Desserts. Right before finals, residents can come relieve their stress by indulging in sinful desserts and playing in a bounce house!

Center Hall Council wants to thank all the Center residents and staff for all their support and participation in everything we’ve done this year! It’s been an amazing one!

Barrett Honors College

The deans, faculty and staff of Barrett wish all of the students in the Center Complex Residence Halls a safe, enjoyable and productive summer.  If you are not returning to our community in the fall please know that your presence and participation make this residential college one of the most successful in the nation.  Each year we value our resident’s feedback and turn those ideas into engaging programming and a dynamic environment where Barrett students share and explore the many exceptional resources of the college and university.  As we reflect on the many successes of the last year we are well aware that the on-campus living component is a vital piece of the honors experience.  Center Complex is your “home” and we hope that you will contact us at 480-965-8415 with any feedback you wish to share.  Additionally, we would like to thank the amazing staff in Residential Life who worked so hard all year to support both the residents and the mission of Barrett.  Your resourcefulness, professionalism and caring are invaluable.
